What is Calendula Oil?

Calendula oil is an oil that originates from the marigold flowers native to Southern Europe and Asia. The plant holds a respected place in both Unani and Ayurvedic medicinal traditions, owed in part to its natural oil rich in antibacterial, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory properties.

Calendula oil is packed with compounds such as alpha amyrin, beta amyrin, lupeol, oleanolic acid, and quercetin. These constituents boast antioxidant properties, which may lend the skin a soothing appearance – making this oil a popular addition to many people’s skincare routines. Often, calendula-infused oil finds its way into massage oils or serves as a carrier oil in homemade essential oil blends.

How is Calendula Oil Made?

Calendula infused oil is typically made through an infusion process, where first, the petals of the calendula (marigold) flowers are harvested. These flowers are often handpicked and dried to reduce their moisture content. Once dried, they are ready for the infusion process.

The dried petals are then placed into a jar, and a carrier oil, such as sunflower oil or sweet almond oil, is poured over them until they are fully covered. The jar is sealed and left in a warm, sunny place for several weeks to allow the calendula's beneficial properties to infuse into the oil.

Once the infusion process is complete, the oil is carefully strained to remove the flower petals, and the remaining oil, now enriched with the properties of calendula, is stored in a clean, airtight container. It should be kept in a cool, dark place to preserve its potency and extend its shelf life.

How Do You Use Calendula Oil?

Calendula oil is an all-rounder because of the many properties it possesses, such as its ability to help improve the appearance of skin. Here are some ways calendula-infused oil can be used:

In Sun Protection

It's important to remember that while calendula oil can be an enriching addition to your skincare routine, it is by no means a substitute for sunscreen. That said, when used in conjunction with your favourite SPF, calendula oil might help to keep your skin feeling comfortable and looking moisturised, making for a more enjoyable sun care experience.

Calendula oil does not offer sun protection properties itself, so it should not be used as a standalone method of shielding your skin from harmful UV rays. A patch test is recommended before mixing oils into your skincare products.

For Skincare

Calendula-infused oil has been appreciated by many for its potential benefits in skincare routines. While it's not a cure or treatment for skin conditions, some people find it comforting for their skin. It can be added to numerous other products and ingredients, including creams, lotions, and balms, potentially providing a radiant appearance.

Other Ingredients to Mix With Calendula Oil

To optimise the results of calendula-infused oil on your skin, you can blend it with other natural ingredients, provided that it suits the skincare effect you are aiming to achieve. As a carrier oil, calendula-infused oil can be paired with essential oils that require dilution prior to use. It can also be combined with other carrier oils and natural ingredients.

Here are some products that you may consider blending with calendula-infused oil, to maximise skincare benefits:

As with any product, it's crucial to conduct a patch test before extensive use and consult with a healthcare professional or skincare expert for personalised advice. Remember, individual results may vary, and this oil should not replace SPF or professional medical advice or treatment. Never ingest any of these oils.
