Shea butter is one of the most popular natural ingredients used in the cosmetic and beauty industry. Why all the fuss? Well, Shea butter is very rich in fats and blends well with other ingredients, making it a great base for homemade moisturiser, body butter, and even deodorant.

N-Essentials is proud to stock an ever-increasing collection of essential oils, carrier oils, and raw ingredients, including Shea butter, available in sizes ranging from 250g to bulk sizes.

What Is Shea Butter Made From?

Shea butter, also known as Karite, is a fat extracted from the nut of the Shea Tree, which is commonly found in the tropics of Africa. It has a thick, nutty scent and a colour that varies from ivory to cream, light yellow, or green.

Shea butter comes in two forms refined or unrefined. Natural unrefined Shea butter is the purest form of the product. It is typically extracted using traditional West African methods, which means no other ingredients, chemicals, preservatives or heat are used, and all its natural benefits are retained.

Refined Shea butter, on the other hand, has been processed to remove impurities, resulting in a product that is high in purity but low in nutrient levels.

Common Uses for Shea Butter

Shea butter, especially in its raw, unrefined state, is considered to be rich in nutrients, vitamins, and fatty acids, making it an excellent addition to your skincare regimen.

Natural unrefined Shea butter is a semi-soft butter that melts and rapidly absorbs upon skin contact. It is a skin-nourishing emollient that can be used on its own or blended well into a cosmetic ingredient such as lotions, creams, soaps, or shampoos. Other uses include:

  • Moisturiser
  • Body butter
  • Deodorant
  • Sunscreen or sunscreen bars
  • Liquid creme foundation
  • Cuticle cream

Shea butter's fatty acids also help to condition the scalp and hair from the roots to the tips. It is very effective helping your hair appear moisturised without leaving it greasy or heavy.

Is It Okay to Use Shea Butter Every Day?

When planning to introduce a new natural ingredient to your skin or hair care routine, one of the first questions many people have is, how often can I use it?

The answer, of course, depends on a variety of factors, from what other ingredients you are mixing it with to the intended use. In the case of Shea butter, applying it every day to your hair or skin is unlikely to do harm.

However, as is the case with all raw ingredients, be sure to do a spot test before using Shea butter liberally. Apply the ingredient to your skin and wait 24 hours to confirm no adverse reaction occurs. If you do experience irritation, speak to your doctor.

How Do I Store This Product?

Storing Shea butter in the correct environment will increase its lifespan, keeping it nutrient-rich for as long as possible. Exposure to light, air, and moisture can lead to decomposition, which will be accompanied by a nasty smell.

As is the case with many raw ingredients, Shea butter should be stored in an airtight container in a cool, dark, and dry place. If you live in a particularly hot climate, pop it in the fridge to prevent it from rotting.

Generally speaking, when stored correctly, Shea butter has a lifespan of between 12 to 24 months.

Absolutely love this product. I use it to make moisturiser for face and body as well as lip balm. Also great for hair. Wouldn't buy it from anywhere else

    Best Hair

Published by Dawn Elliott on 18th Jan 2021

I have only used this for a few weeks and I can not believe the difference in my hair. I made a treatment (Shae, castor oil, lavender) and left it in for an hour then washed with shampoo and no conditioner but my hair is soft and smoother than ever. I was never able to brush my hair after it dried because it would frizz. Now it is not frizzing at all. I will be buying more products to test them out. Unrefined Organic Shae Butter will be my staple.

Smooth consistency but very smokey smell

Published by Tivy on 11th Sep 2020

I ordered a smaller batch of unrefined Shea butter elsewhere and was absolutely in love with the delicious smell - nutty and almost chocolatey with just a hint of smoke. I ordered a larger amount from N Essentials hoping for something similar and while the texture is lovely (smoother than my other shea butter) I was disappointed with the scent which was unpleasantly (very) smokey while also pungent/sharp. At a closer look the colours are also very slightly different with this N Essentials one being a purer white. Perhaps it has to do with where the Shea butter was from exactly? >>>>N-essentials: It's more to do with the fact that you ordered UNREFINED shea butter from us. Unrefined shea butter has a nutty smell and a ivory colour. You mentioned above that the shea that you used to get elsewhere is a purer white - this is REFINED shea butter. Refined shea doesn't have a smell.

The Texture is not the same as other organic shea butters I have tried. The outcome is not as soft and smooth as other organic shea butters I have tried. I am so disappointed I have spent so much money thinking this was a cheaper option. However, delivery was fast! >>>>>N-esentials: From our discussion, we understand that you tried to whip the shea butter without melting it first or softening it. Cold whipping does not always provide for a smooth texture as it does not necessarily breakdown the fatty acids in the unrefined shea butter to provide for a smooth texture. The fatty acids re-harden at different rates to the rest of the shea butter which resulted in a sometimes grainy texture. To remedy this, you can add a carrier oil to dissolve the good fats and prevent it from re-hardening at different rates. Alternatively, you can try melting the unrefined shea butter and then whipping it to create a fluffy mixture.

this is the first time I try to make my own beauty products at home and I am amazed at how good this is! I mixed it with a carrier oil (jojoba) and essential oils (lavander and tea tree) and I use it for face and body. I love that it's all natural
