When the weather starts to cool down and the seasons shift, so should your self-care routines. Your skin and hair require different types of care than they did in summer. The air is less humid, and harsh winds and conditions cause dryer skin and brittle strands, which means you should be giving your skin and hair tender love and care. And one great way to boost your haircare routine is through a DIY hair mask.
At N-Essentials, we love DIY hair masks! Every scalp has unique needs, which is why making your own hair mask with essential oils and carrier oils to suit is such a great idea.
This blog contains three of our best homemade hair masks for winter, so you can keep your locks looking luscious and long!

Our Best Hair Mask Recipes for Winter
1. Avocado and Borage Oil Hair Mask
Avocados are known for their smooth texture and nutrient-rich content. When mashed and combined with the easily spreadable borage oil and honey, this mask can help give the appearance of smoothness and shine to the hair. To make this hair mask, follow these instructions:
Ingredients:
- 1 ripe Avocado
- 2 tablespoons borage oil
- 1 tablespoon honey
Instructions:
- Mash the avocado, then mix in the borage oil and honey.
- Apply the mixture directly to your hair, focusing on the ends.
- Leave it on for 30-40 minutes, then rinse, shampoo, and condition as usual.
- Discard the remaining mixture.
2. Coconut, Rosemary and Lavender Oil Hair Mask
When blended, essential oils and carrier oils can create the perfect base for a hair mask, while honey adds a luxurious texture. You can use this hair mask once a week. This hair mask can help to give the appearance of soft, healthy hair. Here’s how you make it:
Ingredients:
- 2 tablespoons coconut oil
- 1 tablespoon raw honey
- 5 drops of rosemary essential oil
- 5 drops of lavender essential oil
Instructions:
- Blend these ingredients in a dry glass bowl and apply from the roots to the tips of your hair.
- Cover with a shower cap. Leave it for at least an hour before you wash it with a natural and mild hair cleanser.
- Discard any remaining mixture.
3. Coconut Oil and Honey Mask
Coconut oil is often praised for its smooth texture. Paired with honey, which adds a layer of lustrous shine, this mask aims to leave your hair looking deeply conditioned and glossy. Want to try it for yourself? Follow these steps:
Ingredients:
- 2 tablespoons fractionated coconut oil
- 1 tablespoon honey
Instructions:
- Warm the coconut oil and honey in the microwave until they can mix easily.
- Apply the mixture immediately to your hair, focussing primarily on the ends – especially if they are dry and damaged.
- Leave the mask in for 30-40 minutes and then rinse. Continue your shampoo and condition routine as normal.
- Discard any remaining mixture.
Use a combination of these masks 1-2 times a week, or rotate through the hair mask cycle weekly for optimal results. However, these results will depend on your hair type and needs. As we said, no two scalps are the same!
Remember to always perform a patch test on your skin before using any new ingredients to ensure you won't have any adverse reactions. If you’re unsure if an ingredient is safe to use on your skin, consult your dermatologist or GP.
Can I Leave a Hair Mask on Overnight?
Whether or not you can leave a hair mask on overnight depends on the ingredients of the mask. Generally, hydrating masks that are primarily made from oils can be left on overnight. These types of masks work by allowing the oils to penetrate your hair over an extended period, which can help to give the appearance of more intense nourishment.
However, it's essential to make sure the mask doesn't contain any ingredients that could potentially irritate your scalp if left on for too long. Also, if you decide to leave a mask on overnight, it's a good idea to wrap your hair in a towel or wear a shower cap to avoid ruining your bedding.
Remember, everyone's hair and scalp are different, and what works for one person might not work for another. Keep in mind that some oils can be potent. Exercise caution while using them and consult a doctor before application. All oils are meant for external use only. Make sure that you do not ingest any of them.
