FAQ's
What oils smell minty?
Essential oils with a minty scent include:
- Peppermint — Cool and distinctly fresh with menthol brightness
- Spearmint — Sweet-mint aroma with a smooth and gentle edge
- Wintergreen — Strong, sweet-mint fragrance with a crisp bite
Mint essential oils are often used in home fragrance, body care, cleaning products and DIY blends to introduce a sense of freshness and clarity. They can also be added to diffusers, surface sprays, candles or bath formulations where a refreshing aroma is preferred.
Does rosemary oil smell minty?
Rosemary Essential Oil is not technically a mint oil, but it belongs to the same plant family. Its aroma is herbal, woody and slightly camphorous, with occasional mint-like undertones depending on the distillation. It’s more earthy and resinous than the classic minty essential oils.
How do I use minty essential oils for natural insect repellant?
You can use minty essential oils in simple DIY diffuser blends to help deter insects naturally. First, add 3 to 5 drops of Peppermint or Spearmint Essential Oil and 2 to 3 drops of citrus oil such as Lemongrass or Eucalyptus to your diffuser. Adjust ratios depending on the diffuser size and your scent preference to create a clean, fresh-smelling atmosphere. <
Always keep mint essential oils away from pets and children. Store bottles tightly closed, away from heat and sunlight to maintain their quality and extend their shelf life. Avoid contact with eyes and other sensitive areas, and ensure all blends are clearly labelled for safe storage and use.
Are peppermint and wintergreen the same?
No. Peppermint comes from the true mint family and has a clean, piercing menthol scent often described as brisk and herbaceous. It carries green, slightly peppery undertones that give it an invigorating character.
Wintergreen, by contrast, is derived from the leaves of a shrub native to North America. Its scent is sweeter, smoother and more balsamic, with a creamy, almost medicinal depth that differs from the crispness of peppermint. While both can be perceived as “minty”, wintergreen leans more towards a candy-like aroma, whereas peppermint feels fresher and more botanical.
