As you have probably heard by now, essential oils are amazing!

They have so many different uses, properties, and health benefits.  Essential oils are a great additive to your skincare routine, hair care, and even your household care.

There are many different essential oils available in a number of different fragrances. Not only can you choose the oils you want based on the scent and what appeals to you, but also different essential oils have different properties in them that can assist with different ailments, skin concerns, and hair issues.

Choosing your essential oils to use may sound daunting once you look at a list of all the different oils available, however, it does not need to be difficult.

We have put together a list that can help you with choosing the best essential oils to help with your hair care, creating healthier hair and helping to produce a glow and shine to your hair.

How do I use essential oils in my hair?

You can choose to simply mix a few drops of the essential oils together and rub through your hair before rinsing out or you can combine the essential oils with a carrier oil to create a fuller, cream-like solution that can then be put in the hair and left on for a little while as a hair soak before rinsing off.

What is a carrier oil?

A carrier oil is an oil that still comes from a plant base but does not have a distinctive fragrance as an essential oil does.

A carrier oil is normally found in larger amounts than essential oils, as you tend to use more of the carrier oil than an essential oil in a recipe or formulation.

Some carrier oils that are great for use in the hair include argan oil, coconut oil, almond oil, and olive oil.

By using a carrier oil with your essential oils you are able to still have the benefits of the essential oil in the hair and are able to create a paste or soak that moisturises the whole head at once.

Which essential oils should I use in my hair?

There are a number of different essential oils that have benefits to use in the hair. It does depend on the reason behind why you want to use the oils in your hair that determine which ones are best to use.

Firstly, you need to determine what the concern is with your hair; such as dryness, oiliness or breaking of the hair. Once you know the reason behind needing the essential oils you will be able to choose the best one for your hair type and needs.

Check out below a list of the best essential oils to use as part of your hair care routine and how to incorporate them.

  • Cedarwood oil– helps stimulate the scalp and promotes hair growth.
  • Chamomile oil – helps to add shine and softness to hair, and soothes the scalp.
  • Clary sage oil – helps to promote hair growth and stimulates the scalp.
  • Geranium oil - helps to strengthen the hair.
  • Lavender oil– helps to deep condition the hair, keeps it shiny, and helps control dandruff.
  • Rosemary oil– helps to stimulate the roots, improves hair growth, and increases circulation in the scalp.
  • Sandalwood oil- helps with dry ends, and adds an earthy aroma to the hair.

How to use:

Simply use 2-3 drops of your chosen essential oil and massage through the hair.

Alternatively mix 2-3 drops of your chosen essential oil with a carrier oil or straight into your shampoo or conditioner.

Leave for a few minutes and then rinse off.

Essential oils can help with the strengthening of the hair, shine, and softness. So why not massage a few drops through and start to see the benefits.
