INCI: Potassium Sorbate

What is Potassium Sorbate

Potassium sorbate, the potassium (inactive) salt of sorbic acid, is a preservative that is widely regarded as safe around the world. It is widely used in cosmetics, and personal care products to extend shelf life and maintain the integrity of the product formula.

This preservative prevents the presence of possible contaminants. It is safe to use potassium sorbate for skin since it is ‘generally regarded as safe’ (GRAS), which means it rarely triggers allergic reactions and is suitable for most skin types.

Product Specifications

Potency

Mild

Appearance

It has an off-white crystalline powder appearance with granular/pellet needles

Scent

Odourless

Length

Approximately 5mm in length

Particle size

20-40 mesh

Density

1.36g/cm3

Solubility

It dissolves easily in water and transforms to sorbic acid, which is the active form.

Optimum Product pH Level

Sorbic acid is active up to pH 6 (roughly 6%), but it is most active at pH 4.4 (70%). Its efficacy will be reduced if the pH level rises above 6.0. Because of the importance of pH, we recommend that it will be best to verify the pH of your finished product before using it.

Best Combined with

Sodium benzoate for enhanced potency and antioxidant to avoid oxidation

Sensitivity

As an unsaturated fatty acid, sorbic acid is susceptible to oxidation, (use of an antioxidant is recommended).

It is also UV-sensitive, and in solution, it can turn yellow.

Potassium sorbate is widely used in skincare, cosmetics, and body care formulations to help prolong product shelf life and ensure a more stable formulation by inhibiting yeast, fungi, and mould formation.

While being a great alternative to parabens, it is however, unable to combat bacteria. Since it is not known as a broad spectrum it should therefore be used in combination with other preservatives, such as sodium benzoate, to ensure that products are fully protected.

COMMON USES OF POTASSIUM SORBATE

  • Moisturiser
  • Creams
  • Lotions
  • Body Butter
  • Clay Masks
  • Sunscreen
  • Shampoo
  • Conditioner

How to Use Potassium Sorbate?

Generally, potassium sorbate is added once the product formulation has achieved its optimal pH level of 4-6—either after the initial mixing or prior to the heat treatment. This allows the even distribution of potassium sorbate to the formulation.

Take the prescribed potassium sorbate concentration (as recommended below) and mix it into your product formulation.

  • Cosmetics: 0.025% – 0.10%
  • Haircare products: 0.15% – 0.3%
  • Personal Care: 0.2% – 0.3%
  • Bath Products: 0.1% – 0.2%

Why Use Potassium Sorbate

Extends the shelf life of products. Potassium sorbate, as a preservative, terminates any presence of possible contaminants. This keeps the formulation from spoiling.

Maintains properties of products. Potassium  sorbate aids in keeping the products’ physical and chemical properties, thus maintaining their effectiveness.

Versatile application. Potassium sorbate is highly stable—it doesn't budge even under varying temperatures and pH levels. Bottomline is: this preservative is applicable to different types of products.

Complements & boosts other ingredients. It serves like a booster! Fascinating, indeed, how potassium sorbate can improve the properties of other ingredients.

Can be used for sensitive skin. Potassium sorbate for skin use is considered safe. It is a rare skin sensitiser. This means that it doesn’t typically cause allergic reactions or skin irritations, unlike other preservatives.

Safe according to regulatory authorities. Is it safe to use potssaium sorbate in Australia? Absolutely, since potassium sorbate has a “generally regarded as safe” (GRAS) classification and has been utilised in many cosmetics and personal care products.

4 Tips for Effective Use

1. The Australian Society of Cosmetic Chemists recommends a concentration of potassium sorbate with not less than 0.025% and not exceeding 0.1% when used as a preservative in cosmetic and personal care products.

2. For enhanced preservation, combine potassium sorbate with other preservatives, such as:

  • Sodium benzoate
  • Emollients
  • Humectants
  • Emulsifiers
  • Surfactants
  •

3. Constantly monitor your product’s pH level. Ensure that your products are at a 5.5 pH level—6.5 at most—to keep potassium sorbate potent and maintain the product’s overall antimicrobial state.

4. Once potassium sorbate is integrated into the product, conduct preservation efficacy test (PET) and stability testing to ensure the effectiveness of the preservation agents and the safety of your products.

Pro tip: Formulating with ingredients that are pH-sensitive is quite a challenge. The trick here is to constantly and carefully monitor the formulation. Make sure that it reaches its optimal state best for these ingredients.

At this point, when you may already be considering purchasing potassium sorbate, “where to buy it, though?” you ask.

FAQs

Extra caution is needed if you are sensitive to sorbic acid. You may get skin irritation or allergic reactions. Potassium sorbate may cause serious eye irritation upon eye contact. Otherwise, potassium sorbate is safe to use in prescribed concentrations.

Use this to prevent the growth of contaminants in your formulation. Also, to keep the effectiveness of your cosmetics and personal care products. During formulation, ensure that your product pH achieves a level between 4-6. Then add the preservative.

To achieve a broader spectrum preservation effect, use potassium sorbate with other preservatives. Check out sodium benzoate, emollients, humectants, emulsifiers, and surfactants.
