Shea Butter is one of the most popular natural ingredients used in the cosmetic and beauty industry. Why all the fuss? Well, Shea butter is very rich in fats and blends well with other ingredients, making it a great base for homemade moisturiser, body butter, and even deodorant.

N-Essentials is proud to stock an ever-increasing collection of essential oils, carrier oils, and raw ingredients, including Shea Butter. You can find all your essential ingredients, like Shea Butter, in sizes ranging from 250g packs to bulk packs of 20kg.

WHAT IS SHEA BUTTER MADE FROM?

Shea Butter, also known as Karite, is a fat extracted from the nut of the Shea Tree, which is commonly found in the tropics of Africa. It has a thick, nutty scent and a colour that varies from ivory to cream, light yellow, or green.

Shea Butter comes in two forms — refined or unrefined. Natural, unrefined Shea Butter is the purest form of the product. It is typically extracted using traditional West African methods, which means no other ingredients, chemicals, preservatives or heat are used, and all its natural benefits are retained. The unrefined Shea Butter you’ll find at N-Essentials is also organic, which means it is closer to a natural product. It also does not contain any toxic chemicals, synthetic additives or preservatives, and is grown with organic farming methods.

Refined Shea Butter, on the other hand, has been processed to remove impurities, resulting in a product that is high in purity but low in nutrient levels.

COMMON USES FOR SHEA BUTTER

Shea Butter, especially in its raw, unrefined state, is an excellent addition to your skincare regimen.

Natural unrefined Shea Butter is a semi-soft butter that melts and rapidly absorbs upon skin contact. It is a wonderful ingredient that can be used on its own or blended well with other ingredients to make DIY cosmetic goods such as lotions, creams, soaps, or shampoos. Other uses include:

  • Moisturiser
  • Body butter
  • Deodorant
  • Sunscreen or sunscreen bars
  • Liquid creme foundation
  • Cuticle cream

Shea Butter's fatty acids also help improve the appearance of your scalp, hair and skin. It is very effective in helping your hair appear moisturised without leaving a greasy or heavy residue.

BENEFITS OF SHEA BUTTER

Organic unrefined Shea Butter offers a lot of benefits for those looking to enrich their haircare and skincare routines.

Natural Skincare and Hair care:

Shea Butter is an excellent addition to your moisturiser. It's particularly beneficial for those looking for natural, uncontaminated ingredients.

When applied to hair, Shea Butter can improve the appearance of your hair, especially for those with frizzy hair.

DIY Cosmetic Base:

For those who enjoy making their own cosmetics, Shea Butter serves as a versatile base for homemade products like lotions, moisturisers, shampoos, and body butters.

Environmentally Friendly:

Choosing organic, unrefined Shea Butter supports sustainable and chemical-free farming practices. It's a greener choice compared to many synthetic or heavily processed alternatives.

By choosing organic unrefined Shea Butter, you can enjoy these varied benefits while also embracing a more natural and environmentally conscious approach to personal care and beauty.

HOW LONG DOES UNREFINED SHEA BUTTER LAST?

When stored properly, unrefined Shea Butter has a lifespan of a few years from manufacture.

HOW TO STORE UNREFINED SHEA BUTTER?

Shea Butter can be stored at room temperature. It should ideally be stored in an airtight container in a cool, dark, and dry place, especially in hotter climates.

IS IT OKAY TO USE SHEA BUTTER EVERY DAY?

When planning to introduce a new natural ingredient to your skin or hair care routine, one of the first questions many people have is, how often can I use it?

The answer, of course, depends on a variety of factors, from what other ingredients you are mixing it with to the intended use. In the case of Shea Butter, applying it every day to your hair or skin is unlikely to do harm.

However, as is the case with all raw ingredients, be sure to do a spot test before using Shea Butter liberally. Apply the ingredient to your skin and wait 24 hours to confirm no adverse reaction occurs. If you do experience irritation, speak to your doctor. Do not ingest Shea Butter at all.

HOW DO I STORE ORGANIC UNREFINED SHEA BUTTER?

Storing Shea Butter in the correct environment will increase its lifespan, keeping it in an ideal condition for as long as possible. Exposure to light, air, and moisture can lead to decomposition. This decomposition can cause it to break down and develop an unpleasant odour.

Like most natural products, Shea Butter should be kept in a sealed container in a location that is cool, dark, and moisture-free. For those living in warmer climates, refrigerating Shea Butter is advisable to prevent it from spoiling or rotting, which can also give out an unpleasant smell.

Generally speaking, when stored correctly, Shea Butter has a lifespan of a few years from manufacture.

WHAT DOES ORGANIC UNREFINED SHEA BUTTER SMELL LIKE?

Shea Butter has a distinct smell that is often described as nutty and earthy. The scent can vary slightly depending on its purity and processing method.

Organic unrefined Shea Butter, which is processed without chemicals or added fragrances, typically has a stronger, more natural scent. This natural aroma is often described as slightly smoky or nut-like.

On the other hand, refined Shea Butter, which undergoes more processing, generally has a less pronounced smell, and in some cases, it might be almost odourless or could even include other fragrances if added. The natural scent of Shea Butter is considered pleasant by many, but it can vary based on personal preference.

I need to wear medical compression stockings to my knees 24/7. In hotter weather my skin flakes badly and is very dry and can get sore (extremely raw and sore!). Few items seem to work but already I have found this soothing. It absorbs oils easily so I have mixed with castor, Jojoba, some pawpaw and a little honey. Within two days my skin has gone from painful to reasonably soothed. I'm now going to try refrigerating the cream simply because that immediate coolness will remove the heat that pulses from the skin area where the stockings go. Compression stockings can be great but unbelievably drying.

Love this product - I beat 1/2 cup Shea butter with 1 1/2 tbsp coconut oil + 1/4 tsp essential oil blend (ylang ylang, patchouli, frankincense, clary sage, orange & thyme) for 10 mins with electric beater to make a beautiful moisturiser. Have been doing this for years & love it!

During winter my hand cracked really badly, i have tried various hand creams but no use. So i decided to make my own hand mask. So glad I could get everything here! I used Unrefined Shea Butter, combined with Macadamia Oil, Sweet Almond Oil, Meadowfoam Seed Oil and Moroccan Argan Oil as the base, and then added Palmarosa Essential Oil and Frankincense Essential Oil. I put the mask all over my hands and then wear cotton gloves. Sometimes for a couple of hours at night while watching TV, or wear it to sleep overnight. I saw huge improvement just after a few times! It's only been a week since I used it and I'm very happy with the result! I don't have to keep putting moisturizer on because they don't feel dry anymore. I'll keep using it regularly!
