WHAT IS PATCHOULI ESSENTIAL OIL?

The leaves of the Pogostemon Cablin plant are used to make patchouli essential oil . It is a perennial herb native to  and extensively cultivated in tropical regions in Asia, Brazil, and Hawaii.  Patchouli oil has a medium to a thick consistency and a rich, dark golden brown colour and an aroma that can be best described as a strong combination of sweet, spicy and musky.

Patchouli essential oil has been highly-praised for its versatility. It can be used topically or aromatically when diluted properly. Amidst being a member of the mint family (along with Lavender, Mint, and Sage), the plant has a sweet and musky scent that is currently used in perfumery, cosmetics, soap making, clothing detergents  or used to blend with other complementary scents  while its unique, herbaceous, and calming aroma works best in aromatherapy.

PATCHOULI ESSENTIAL OIL USES AND BENEFITS

Patchouli essential oil has a strong affinity for skin care and body care applications  and is widely regarded as a must-have. It helps your skin look visibly younger and radiant as it reduces the appearance of age spots and comedones.

Because of its distinct fragrance, patchouli essential oil is widely used in the production of soaps, candles, detergents, and as a base note in many perfumes.  Patchouli essential oil is highly valued in the perfume industry, and it is known to improve with age, depending on the raw material and proper storage . Over time, the patchouli scent is said to become richer and smoother.

It also has powerful insecticidal properties and can be used in sprays, body lotions, vaporisers, and incense sticks as an effective repellent.

Its strong, woodsy, and musky fragrance makes it an outstanding natural deodorant. As well, it aids in the prevention of body odour by killing the germs and bacteria that cause it.

CAUTION:

  • If undiluted, make a mixture first with a carrier oil before applying it to your skin.
  • Patchouli essential oil’s aroma might be overpowering to some. If so, you may try to use it in moderate dilution or blend it with other essential oils.
