COMMON USES & APPLICATIONS
For formulating
- Oil phase antioxidant: Added at 0.5% to 1% of the batch to slow the oxidation of carrier oils in balms, serums, lotions and body butters. Vitamin E does not preserve a formula, so any blend containing water still needs a broad-spectrum preservative.
- Facial oils and serums: Blended at 1% to 5% into oil-based serums and facial oils for a richer, heavier texture.
- Soap making: Added to the oil phase of cold process and melt and pour batches.
For skin and face
- Night facial oil: Its heavy texture suits night-time use, layered after water-based products rather than under make-up.
- Balms and body butters: Adds richness to whipped butters and cuticle balms.
- Dry areas: Massaged into elbows, heels and cuticles, on its own or thinned with a lighter oil.
For hair
- Dry ends: A drop or two warmed between the palms and smoothed through ends for a sleeker look.
- Pre-wash oil blend: Diluted into a lighter carrier oil and worked through the scalp and lengths before shampooing.
HOW TO USE NATURAL VITAMIN E OIL
Vitamin E oil is thick and concentrated, so it is normally diluted rather than used neat across large areas. Warm a drop between clean fingers, or thin it with a lighter carrier oil such as jojoba or rosehip, then press it into skin at night. A little goes a long way.
DIY three-ingredient night serum
- 2 drops natural vitamin E oil
- 1 teaspoon jojoba oil
- 1 drop lavender essential oil
Combine in a small dark glass bottle, roll between the palms to mix, then press 2 to 3 drops into clean skin at night after your water-based products.
Adding it to a formulation
- Weigh your total batch, then measure vitamin E at 0.5% to 1% for an antioxidant role or 1% to 5% for a facial oil.
- Stir it through the oil phase at cool-down rather than holding it at high heat.
- Date the batch so you can track how the blend holds up over time.
TIPS FOR BEST RESULTS
- Dilute with a lighter carrier oil, as the neat oil is thick and slow to spread.
- Use it at night rather than under make-up, since it sits on the surface longer than a light oil does.
- Add it to oil blends, not water-based formulas, as it is oil soluble.
- Vitamin E slows the oxidation of oils. It is not a preservative and will not protect a water-containing formula, which still needs a broad-spectrum preservative.
- Patch test before first use.
CARE & CAUTIONS
- For external use only, do not ingest.
- Avoid the eye area.
- Store in a cool, dark place, tightly sealed between uses.
- Keep out of reach of children.
