Belonging to the Lamiaceae family, the Patchouli or the Pogostemon cablin is a bushy, perennial herb that thrives in humid places and can be mostly found in open fields. It typically grows up to 1 meter in height with egg-shaped leaves and cultivates tiny blooms that are white and pale pink.
The patchouli plant’s main component, patchoulol, is extracted through steam distillation of its dried leaves. Patchoulol is a type of alcohol that plays an important role in the world of scents and is acknowledged for its unwavering fragrance that gets even better through time just like a fine wine.
Patchouli Essential Oil is massively used in Aromatherapy for its rich and earthy scent that gives energy to stale places. It helps to deodorise unpleasant odours and masks them with its restorative, musky fragrance. It works well with essential oils such as lavender, and cypress essential oil when diffused.

In Perfumery, patchouli essential oil acts as a base note that gives off a final fragrance once the top notes have evaporated. Base notes are known for their ability to support middle notes in creating a scent that will last for longer periods. It also works to help prolong the effectivity of other perfume ingredients. This makes Patchouli Essential Oil suitable to use for both earthy and floral blends.
Furthermore, Patchouli began to be extensively used throughout the years and became a symbol of luxury in the Victorian Era. Nowadays, many expensive brands incorporate patchouli in making their colognes and perfumes. Why spend too much money when you already have patchouli essential oil at hand?
